Stop us if you’ve heard this one before, but the Jacksonville Jaguars finally have their franchise quarterback. Apologies to Blake Bortles, Trevor Lawrence looks like the real deal. Heading up the operation is famed college coach Urban Meyer who made the jump to the NFL this year. The Jaguars aren’t expected to be a playoff team this season, but they should at least finish well ahead of their AFC South rivals, the Texans.
With the situations around quarterback DeShaun Watson still unresolved—he’s sticking by trade demands and is currently under investigation for more than 20 sexual assault allegations—the Texans are rolling with veteran Tyrod Taylor as their starter. The roster is pretty threadbare overalls. Their best players are arguably offensive tackle Laremy Tunsil and receiver Brandin Cooks. Houston’s playing out the string this year, starting with this game.
The Jacksonville Jaguars are 2-8 against the Houston Texans since November of 2016, but they’ll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Sunday. They will face off at 1 p.m. ET Sept. 12 at NRG Stadium to kick off their 2021 seasons. Returning after a rocky 1-15 year, the Jaguars are aiming to prove that the past does not define them. Likewise, coming off of an uninspired 4-12 last-season record, Houston has set their aspirations higher this season.
A pair of last-season defensive stats to keep an eye on Jacksonville ranked second-worst with respect to yards allowed per game last year, where the squad gave up 417.7 on average. Houston experienced some struggles of their own as they were worst when it came to rushing yards allowed per game last year, with the team giving up 160.3 on average. It’s possible one of these Achilles’ heels will wind up tripping the losing team-up.
The neutral point spread forecasts a close one for these two. We’ll see if the game is as close as the oddsmakers expect or if one of these teams has a surprise blowout in them.
